Lorenzo: Ignition

Even though it is the surname of the band's vocalist Mark, it has to be said that the moniker Lorenzo will never be the most dynamic in the world of rock. So it is just as well that this trio hammer out a pretty fantastic brand of classic rock that touches many bases - all of them convincingly. Saying they come from the classic rock sphere immediately conjures up images of Zeppelin, Purple, Sabbath and so on and while it is obvious that this is the source from which the origins of Lorenzo's output comes, it is more the modern end of classic that Lorenzo spend their time. Think Black Stone Cherry, Shinedown, Slash and you won't be far away, however there's more going on here, with the likes of the even more up to date Young Guns coming to mind. Clever, very clever indeed.

The band have been around for a short time now, with Love Shaped Bruise seeing the light of day in 2006 (four of its tracks are actually given a brush up for this new album). However a rummage around the band's website merch store suggests their history stretches back further to 2000, although under the name Echo Park. Either way, Ignition (the second Lorenzo release) won't be my last encounter with this bass-less trio, with their neat mix of styles and eras being one of the best straight rock albums of 2012 (yeah, I know, I'm slow in catching on...). No wonder they've already garnered the interest of TV shows like ESPN College Football, Shark, Girlfriends and 90210, who've all used tracks by the band.

Packed with energy, dripping with melody, Ignition is an album that knows exactly what it's about, with riffs packed in by the barrel load, vocals that stand tall and proud and punchy drums that keep the ship steady while making the sails billow through the sheer energy with which they're attacked. However the real touch of class here is the ease with which the likes of "Wonder", "Naked And Wasted" and "The Truth" straddle the gap between seventies, eighties and noughties rock. Sounding like they belong to each, while never spending too much time paying homage to any one in particular. Something sure to broaden this band's possible fan-base. Having said that there's no denying that guitarist Stuart McConnell has the assorted work of a certain Mr Slash in his record collection, however again we aren't in copycat, parody territory here, instead the well aired influences add weight and believability to the overall sound of the album, which was produced by Kevin Churko (Ozzy, Hinder, 5 Finger Death Punch).

If you're looking for an album full of hard hitting punchy rock that wouldn't be out of place on the radio, but which would also be completely at home enthralling arena audiences, look no further than what Lorenzo are offering up.
