Nightbitch: Chainmaker EP

I was a kid when Elvira, Mistress of the Dark first began to make appearances on TV. I was in the fifth grade when people started to tell me about this lady on TV that dressed provocatively and introduced cheesy horror movies. The cover of this EP reminds me of that old show. Just look at the Elvira-like figure lurking in the left hand corner, her gaze turned toward the torture scene in the middle of the picture. She is introducing us to this strange world, much like her television counterpart. The scene to the right is something right out of a 60s-style horror movie. It's not the best cover I've ever seen.

Given the edgy and provocative cover, I was expecting the music on this EP to be a little more horror-driven and dark. The band's mission statement states a commitment to "wicked women, unholy passions and fire nights." I get the humor and the tongue-in-cheek connection to old fashioned horror film, but I'd like a little more "umph" in the music. To be fair, I didn't understand all the lyrics, but I found the music to be very conventional, even a little dull at times. I did like the singer's voice, particularly its strength in delivery and its richness. As an introduction to this band, though, this EP should work harder to give us a taste of greater excitement, a reason to seek these guys out.

Some readers will want to check this out because of its cover of Deep Purple's "Into the Fire." It's pretty good, if a little plodding at times. I would have rather heard original work from the band, if only to get to know their music a little better.
