Lair of the Minotaur: Godslayer EP

Record Store Day is coming up and this little gem is one of its special offerings. For those unfamiliar with the band, they are a Chicago-based act that has been going strong for ten years now. Fans will find two new songs on this EP. The EP also signals a new round of touring, one that kicks off with a free show at Chicago's own Reckless Records on the aforementioned Record Store Day. Be sure to check out the album art by Tom Denney on this thing; it's a scene right out of fantasy writings, something that Robert E. Howard (inventor of Conan the Barbarian) would be proud of. Fans of fantasy art should really dig this one.

The music on this EP is pretty good, but it didn't really seem to be offering anything terribly new or innovative. I shouldn't complain too much, but it's always cool when EPs deliver up really strong songs, the kind that grab listeners directly by the collar and don't let go. EPs should also leave a lasting impression. Of the two tracks, "The Black Heart of the Stygian Drakonas" is the better one. It takes advantage of some cool starts and stops, reminding listeners of the need to pay attention. It also ends with an airy melody (played on a synthesizer, I'm guessing) that gives the whole thing a sense of mystery and wonder.
