Bowie, David: The Calm Before the Storm-Under Review 1969-1971 (DVD)
Loyal fans of rock chameleon David Bowie will find plenty of interest in this 65 minute long DVD, which takes a close look at the years between 1969 and 1971, when the singer first started to make an impact on the rock & roll scene. Space Oddity, Man Who Sold the World, and Hunky Dory were the three records released by Bowie in that time period, which saw him rise from vagabond underground pop artist to a superstar in the making, which fully culminated with Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, but of course, that album is part of another story. This documentary breaks apart the releases mentioned above, and includes interviews with writers, musicians, and associates of Bowie's (John Peel, John Cambridge, John Hutchinson, Bob Solly, Annie Nightingale, and others) as they look back on these very important albums in not only Bowie's career, but also in the history of rock music. Hunky Dory especially is spoken about by the cast as not only perhaps the singers crowning achievement, but also one of the great rock records of all time. Sprinkled throughout the film are concert clips and various bits of footage of Bowie, as well as audio interview segments with the man himself, so if you are a fan, this is a fun and informative hour to spend looking back at some of his great early work.
