Finland's Rock Masters Band certainly have come up with a unique name for their latest Inverse Records release...March of the Pink Fat Elephants. If you were going to assume that these guys are set to take you on a trip down 'retro avenue', well, you've guessed right. Bits of '70s & '80s rock styles permeate each and every track, but there's also a healthy dose of '60s psychedelia & pop to go around as well, with bouncy tunes like" Bravado, Bluff And Beauty" and "I'll Take You Through The Woods", complete with trippy guitars, sound effects, charming vocals, and memorable melodies. Those effects laden guitar patters add a nice touch to the space metal/rock of "Travel in Style", while the atmospheric "State of the Art" sounds like an odd marriage of The Doors and Coheed & Cambria.
I don't know, despite some fun moments, I was left wanting more out of March of the Pink Fat Elephants. There seemed to be more than a few instances where the band was building up to rock out a bit, but other than on "One More Bend, Once Again" and a few other spots, the guys seem to be holding back a little here, instead wanting to come across as cute & clever, which they certainly can be, but if you are like me, ultimately it won't be quite enough.
