Waylon Speed: Valance

"A little southern rock for ya!" said Mr Pardo as he hurled this one in my direction. He knows I like my rock Southern and in a not particularly massive shock I'm feeling positive about Valance. I'm not confident that this will reinvent the genre but if you like your rock of the southern persuasion you'll find plenty to enjoy here.

If you like say, Blackberry Smoke you should very much dig the opening song "Beef Jerky and Beer" and the band (Noah Crowther - bass and vocals, Justin Crowther- drums, Chad Hammaker – guitar and Kelly Ravin - guitar and vocals) have concocted a potent mix of good old fashioned southern rock mixed with a kind of punk ethic to create something quite special.

At times one can hear the Bottle Rockets, Doc Holliday and by extension Thin Lizzy particularly in the guitar harmonies. "Then Again" wouldn't feel overly out of place on Skynyrd's Street Survivors which is high praise indeed and Waylon Speed do indeed lead more towards the country side of southern rock than the jam style of the Allmans but this is a rather good album which shall stay on rotation on my generic mp3 device for some time to come.
