Derdian: Limbo

It's been a few years since we last heard from Italian power metal act Derdian, and needless to say things haven't quite been quiet on their front. The band no longer are part of the Magna Carta family, so they are currently unsigned, and in addition they have parted ways with their old vocalist and brought in new guy Ivan Giannini. Limbo is their latest release, and they've opted not to go with a vast concept piece this time around, instead delivering a more 'song based' album that contains some strong material that should more than please their growing fanbase.

Derdian's brand of melodic, speedy, and symphonic power metal is of course fully intact here, so expect plenty of bombast on tracks such as "Dragon Life", "Forever in the Dark", and "Light of Hate", each one filled with frantic double bass drum passages, blistering guitar, and walls of keyboards. Giannini has a great voice, and his high pitched, at times operatic wail soars above the busy arrangements. Some of the slower, more textured numbers like "Heal My Soul", "Terror", "Hymn of Liberty", and especially the title track, have a more progressive metal feel to them, which adds a nice balance to the album so it's not all relentless speed & bombast. Some of the keyboard work on these songs is actually quite lovely and well thought out.

If you like well played & written power metal, Limbo without a doubt needs to be on your immediate radar. Derdian have once again delivered another winner, and show no signs of their creative juices slowing down.
