Fans of hard driving, classic '70s Italian progressive rock are going to be in for quite a treat when they hear Golem, the brand new debut CD from Italy's Le Porte Non Aperte. These guys push all the right buttons when it comes to delivering the proggy goods here, as they've taken the obvious influences of PFM, Banco, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, and Deep Purple and combined them to come up with a sound that just screams 1973.
Now, I don't speak a lick of Italian, so I can't tell you what any of these songs are about, but I know most serious prog fans generally don't let a language barrier stop them from enjoying some serious music, so chances are if you reading this the Italian vocals will not be an issue. They are delivered in dramatic fashion, at times operatic and over the top, but that's the norm usually with Italian prog, so kudos to Sandro Parrinello for doing a fine job . Musically Golem packs a big punch, as there are plenty of jaw dropping passages littered with vintage keyboards, scorching guitar licks, and gorgeous flute. In fact, when the flute & organ do battle, like on the near 10-minute "Oceano - Nel Canto Della Sirena", the results are simply spectacular. The two part epic "Animale Del Deserto" combines elements of Jethro Tull & Deep Purple, and is one of the most powerful tunes here. Toss in some pastoral acoustic guitar in spots, and rock solid rhythms, and you have a well balanced album that displays a wealth of variety, from symphonic prog, to sizzling hard rock, as well as folk.
Golem certainly has a lot to offer, and for anyone who loves Italian prog-rock with a healthy dose of classic '70s influences, this will be a no brainer.
