Sammal: Sammal

A truly amazing, otherworldly piece of music, this! Seriously, if you are a fan of original prog-rock – or, in fact, any other rock subgenre that refuses to be clichéd – Sammal's self-titled debut album may turn out to be your album of the year!

Starting with "Puolikuu" – a track which isn't even 3 minutes long and yet perfectly manages to grab the listener's attention with its addictive rhythm and far out vocals – this CD oozes originality and no-holds-barred attitude, and each subsequent song only makes this more obvious. Concise tracks like "Puolikuu" stand next to over 9 minutes long epics like the great "Esox Lucius" which starts out lazily, then suddenly jumps to life after the 3 minute mark, to become all crazy near the end; or take "Jäniksen Vuoksi" and "Näennäiskäännännäinen" – two incredibly catchy instrumental pieces that borrow heavily from folk music and make you want to get naked and start dancing in the woods… or something. Then there's also "Jokainen Pysyköön Uskossaan" – a highly atmospheric track with some haunting vocals accompanied by equally haunting – and unpredictable – guitar work. Hell, you could actually praise each and every track on this album in a similar way, so I'm going to stop right here. The important message is: you honestly need to check out Sammal's debut effort to make sure you're not totally missing out on one of this year's most impressive rock releases!

And really, if you think I'm crazy or I'm talking bullshit because I have some profits from the sales of the album (I don't, cross my heart!), do at least check out the video for the final track "Kylmää Usvaa" on YouTube. If you're not convinced by this lovely thing, then you can be excused for turning your back on Sammal – not your thing, I understand, fine. But if you end up loving it, let me assure you – the rest of this CD is just as good as this little gem!
