Snowfall are a Scandinavian band who are new to me. According to their people' " Musically the band sound like a mixture of British and American eighties bands such as Whitesnake, Giant and Firehouse but they retain a Scandinavian trademark too." Perra Johnson is a new addition on drums holding down the rhythm section with PB Riise and as is very much the case with Escape Music Martin Kronlund of Sweden was hired to twiddle the knobs (mixing and mastering) and of course it sounds fabulous. Lee Smalls gives what I consider to be his best performance yet (and I know plenty of you enjoyed his recent solo effort) and guitarist Tore Meli delivers a crunchy set of riffs and solos all over the album.
"Don't Drive Me Home" sets the tone and is the kind of song that would, erm, sound great in the car…possibly driving home. It's that type of driving, melodic hard rock that was so popular in the mid to late 1980s that the Scandinavians still embrace that certainly we Brits feel to be anachronistic but it's done with aplomb and stands out from much of the AOR-by-numbers which saturates today's market as it has a harder edge than most as on "Citadel of Hope" thanks mostly to the aforementioned Tore Meli.
