Giant X is a new collaboration between Running Wild members Rolf Kasparek and Peter J. Jordan with the predictably titled 1 being their debut effort via the SPV / Steamhammer label. In the press release for the album Kasparek and Jordan have stated that this represents something of a departure from their Running Wild speed and power metal bombast with a broader range of influences that encompasses KISS, Queen, Thin Lizzy, Van Halen and Billy Talent which anyone will agree is something of an eclectic mix. The end result comes across as a mixed bag that only occasionally scales the heights that we might have anticipated from the pair and perhaps there is just too much of a conscious effort to move away from the often imitated and yet easily recognisable Running Wild galloping tempos and blazing riffs. That said, you can't knock Rolf and Peter for trying something different.
Biting hard rocker 'On A Blind Flight' kicks off the album and Rolf's energetic vocals make an immediate impact. The strong opening is not sustained throughout and throwaway rockers such as 'Go 4 It', 'The Count' and 'R.O.C.K' are as uninspiring as the titles suggest, heard once and soon forgotten. At the other end of the spectrum are the bare bones, back to the roots, blues of 'Badland Blues' and happy go lucky party anthem 'Let's Dance' that come across well and most certainly grab your attention. Three stars just about sums it up but perhaps the beauty of Giant X is that the when Rolf does return to writing for Running Wild the creative juices will be flowing even quicker than before.
