Inferno (XII): Call of Kia

Call of Kia is the follow-up to the 2011 debut Septem Sermones from Swedish doom/stoner act Inferno (XII). The band is comprised of Bob Ruben on drums, vocalist/guitarist Lars Jonsson, and bassist Johann Goransson. These guys really know how to create a mountain of thick, sludgy doom, as each track is filled with plenty of dark, slow, heavy riffs, psychedelic atmosphere, and gravelly vocals.

You can really hear the influence of early Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, and Electric Wizard, but most importantly this band really seems to have channelled some of Mastodon's more doom laden material, right down to the vocals, the sludgy riffs, and the inclusion of some fiery lead guitar work. The opening epic title track sets the stage for the album with some wicked riffs and chilling vocals, but the swamp ridden doom of "Phantom Hold" will really get the bongs lit and incite some headbanging. The band take the listener on another epic journey with "Spawn in the Tear", mixing doom and psychedelia quite nicely, as the crushing, dirge-like riffs pummel you into oblivion while the trippy atmosphere reels you right back in. "Subramanya" picks up the pace a bit, complete with galloping rhythms to go along with the massive riffing and anguished vocals, while the monstrous "The Illusion of Blake" could have easily been a leftover from any early Sabbath or Saint Vitus album with its brontosaurus style riffs and plodding rhythms. I like the mix of doom with bluesy hard rock on "Which Burns Forever" that recalls vintage Pentagram, while "Snake" is a perfect slice of more modern doom along the lines of Solitude Aeternus or Candlemass.

You probably hear way too much on this site about how great the music coming out of Sweden has been over the last few years...well, get used to it because the fact of the matter is, musicians over there have really hit on some sweet spots in recent years. Whether it be melodic death metal, retro-'70s styled hard rock, blues-rock, stoner, or doom, the Swedes are really on target creating some exciting sounds that, while perhaps not all of it the most original stuff on the planet, is all about quality. Inferno (XII) are no exception; if you love doom/stoner/sludge (or whatever you want to call it) with a slight psychedelic edge, you need to check out Call of Kia. It's that simple.
