Howlin' Widow: Exorcised Accidental/Son Shine

Do we really need to hear from another band rooted in the rifferama and doomderland of Black Sabbath, Clutch, MC5 and Blue Cheer? Well probably not, but when the results are a convincing as this two track single of long lost recordings from Irish act Howlin' Widow, I'm not going to complain.

If you are asking at this stage, "Who are Howlin' Widow?", then so you should, with a 2009 demo and four track 2010 EP being up until now, the band's only output. Although singer Tom Clarke joined HW from Bad Boat (whose EP has also been buffed up and re-released by Freak Flag Records), there's not much else to say about the band, other than that over the years of their existence (2009/2010 and another short stint in 2011), they supported the likes of Trouble, Diamond Head and Garcia Play Kyuss.

So while Howlin' Widow haven't actually been in operation for over two years now, "Exorcised Accidental" and the cleverly titled "Son Shine" show that they were definitely on to something with their final recordings before their towel was thrown in. Both tracks pump, grind and ooze with surging riffs and gurgling grooves, but it is the manic screamin' howl from Clarke that really sets up both as something a little special – although the full on smack of guitars doesn't exactly hurt either.

A bitter sweet release, which can be purchased as a limited edition red vinyl 7", with the sweet coming in the form of finally catching up with a band possessing great power and class, while the bitter kicks in when you realise that there is very little other Howlin' Widow music out there to experience, which is a great shame. My recommendation is you hear these two tracks for yourself and lament with me on what might have been.....
