Dionisyan: Land Of Dreams

Land Of Dreams is the debut effort from Italian dooming deathsters Dionisyan, where two lengthy tracks and two short bookending instrumentals makes up a succinct and reasonably convincing EP. At the time of recording this outfit were little more than a duo, with Tregor Russo handling all the guitars, bass, drums and keyboards, while Ignazio Conticello provides considered and effective death-growls. Although with plans now in place for an album and live shows, a full band has since been put together.

Unlike many one-man-bands, Russo completely avoids the usual "look at me, aren't I clever" pitfalls, keeping the attack simple, straight forward and to the point, while still residing in the realms of interestingly challenging. In an age of sub-genre-genres, you could call the two main tracks, "Touch My Hands" and "Angel Of Seduction" melodic death doom, death metal with a doom laden approach, or simply crawling walls of riffage that hit hard, growled vocals pinning everything else in place. All three descriptions just about cover it and while the production is stark and uncluttered, the decidedly unfussy approach actually helps give the music a far harder edge, without the need for histrionics. On the other hand "The Beginning Of The Torment" and "The End Of Ecstasy" are extremely short classically guitar infused pieces that show little resemblance to the main course served up. Both are well executed, but on a release so short they feel simply frivolous. However they say less is more and while eighteen minutes and two real songs may not really be enough to laud or loathe a band, Dionisyan have done enough with Land Of Dreams to encourage you to want to hear much more from them - which doubtless was their aim.
