Viisikko: IIII

This is one of those albums that have been floating around for a while but never seems to fall into the right hands. Originally released as a self-financed tape in 2011, the album does have its fans, mostly among those who prefer the unknown over the known, the obscure to the popular. It wouldn't be right to call this an album for hipsters, though; better to describe it as one of those punk albums that has a small audience. Fortunately, Svart Records is now offering potential fans a chance to pick up a copy on vinyl, but with only 400 copies coming into circulation, it will probably remain a pretty obscure work. That's too bad.

If some readers decide to pick up a copy, they'll discover an effective blend of hardcore punk and sludge metal reminiscent of Black Flag and a few other iconic punk acts. With lyrics sung in Finnish, some listeners may feel like they are simply being yelled at in a language they don't understand. The result, understandably, may be to stay away, perhaps even shrink a little at all the noise. There's no reason to fear, though. This is actually a pretty solid release, especially in the first half. After that, the band doesn't do much to develop what they've already established. Still, listeners who like angry, rhythmic, hardcore should find plenty here to enjoy.
