Rise Above Dead: Stellar Filth

So far this year, I've either heard or reviewed quite a few new releases that experiment with the moods, chord changes, rhythms, and sounds of post metal. Rise Above Dead is one of those bands and Stellar Filth is one of those releases. This album follows up on the 2010 EP Human Disintegration and features seven new songs ranging between 5 and 8 minutes in length. Rise Above Dead set themselves apart from other bands by bringing a healthy amount of sludge-soaked guitar riffs to their songs. It isn't that original, perhaps, but it sounds pretty good. Check out the first two tracks "Hide and Weep" and "No Land Toward the Sea" for examples of the way these guys call on the power of sludgy distortion and low end riffs to establish their strength and presence. The other tracks weave in more of the individual notes and sustain associated with post metal. The bass lines are often quite interesting, blending single notes and chords into the mix. Listen, for example, to "Bury Them in Dust" for the way the bass works with the guitars. The result is an effective blend of sustain and throb. The vocals are always dirty and harsh, never trying for anything else. That's too bad; at times they work pretty well, especially when the music turns sludgy. When the mood gets mellow, however, the vocals work against things too much. Still, this is a good release from a band that deserves a listen.
