DGM: Momentum

DGM should stand for Damn Great Metal- how did I previously miss out on hearing this killer progressive metal band? DGM's new release Momentum is such a fine album and to top it off there are guest appearances from two of the best, with vocals from Russell Allen(Symphony X) and on guitar they have Jorn Viggo Lofstad (Pagans Mind).

I was going to write my review of the new Stratovarius first but when I started listening to Momentum I just couldn't stop. That speaks volumes about how good an album Momentum is as I'm a huge Stratovarius fan. It was a surprise albeit a very pleasant one after all doesn't everyone love finding that special new band, I know I have with DGM.

The musicianship, like those scintillating keyboard/guitar trade-offs and solos throughout Momentum are just stellar and also you can't forget the fantastic vocals and melodies. DGM's songs could be described as melodic progressive/power metal, a combination that has produced some amazing albums over time and Momentum is another.

Symphony X fans can hear Russell Allen's vocals on the first energetic track "Reason" and Russell slots in perfectly . There is such a vibrant feel about DGM's songs, and on "Trust" they just sound so pumped and animated DGM must be such great live performers. Jorn Viggo Lofstad is one of my favorite guitarists and on "Chaos" he cuts loose once again. There is something about Jorn's style that is so mesmerising, and a significant part of what makes Pagans Mind so good. "Chaos" is quite a varied track as the pace alternates and "Rememberance" has more of that wow factor; I really dig the guitar sound on this one.

"Overload" is a great example of DGM's ability to write compelling metal with a super cool chorus and reminds me of Symphony X at their dynamic best. "Blame" hooks you from the start, and its introduction has a sound that reminds me of that great progressive metal group Evergrey.

The only problem I have with this release is it's going to cost me, as now I'm hooked and have to go and track down their other albums. Do yourself a favour and get this one as soon as it's available.
