Aluk Todolo: Occult Rock

I have always found it difficult to review instrumental albums since I've found them in the main to be more about the musicians showing off then about songwriting skills. Many times I've found instrumental "bands' to completely negate any songwriting structure and focus on flashiness and pomposity so as to impress fellow musicians.

Aluk Todolo, as you might have guessed are an instrumental band, however Occult Rock is far from aimless noodling. At times sounding like black metal and at other times sounding more like doom and even rock, Aluk Todolo is a mish-mash of styles that sound like a band hell-bent on sonic chaos.

At 8 songs and with a running time of close to an hour and a half, one would think that a double CD of instrumental music would get boring pretty fast. However, Occult Rock manages to escape this fate by keeping things interesting. The songs can range from almost trance inducing to straight up eerie at times making Occult Rock something that will appeal to everyone from traditional metal heads to black metaller's.

While Occult Rock is a strange album, I still highly recommend it as an intensely interesting album that anyone with an interest in unique music should listen to.
