With many bands forging a path ahead of their time not many can say they were trailblazers for a whole new movement. Kylesa can certainly stand proud and make that statement ring true amongst their many peers and followers. Most vault collections usually consist of a mish mash of leftover out-takes discarded onto a once lost hard drive only resurfacing when a band member dies. This collection is certainly not, which is a refreshing change, being able to listen to quality material deemed by the band as extra alternate material.
Kylesa's plodding pace is at the forefront of 'Between Silence and Sound II' but 'Paranoid Tempo' soon picks up the pace with its fuzz box vintage distortion and frantic bass. Kylesa's unpredictability is paramount, sometimes you get punk overtones, often some Sabbath infused doom but always a feeling things are done on their terms. If you want to go ape shit then there's 'Wavering' if your mood is more sludge induced then lay back to the weighty 'Drained', all moods are catered for. A cover of Pink Floyd's 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' is given the Kylesa treatment which sounds pretty massive given the distortion/stoner treatment. Vol 1 is an impressive collection of material and probably a lot better than some bands actual output, draw the curtains empty that dimebag and transport yourself to a better place.
