As I Lay Dying: Awakened

With a saturated market, it must seem hard to pull your band out of the never-ending stream of wannabe's and metal by numbers clones. As I Lay Dying have a job on their hands, what they produce is good all out angry heavy metal but there's not much to distinguish them from a hundred other bands. 'A Greater Foundation' chugs along impressively, interspersed with some fat breakdowns and brutal vocals but again, nothing to grab my attention for long periods of time. With so much going on it's difficult to find any focus, breakdowns, gang vocals, scream/clean vocals, man, there's too much for one set of ears. 'Defender' does have a killer bass rumble moving it forward with the interspersed flurries of guitar but it's no saving grace for this casserole of styles.

Not a bad album but I'm positive it will be engulfed by many other bands doing a far better job, so wait for the inevitable bargain bin purchase.
