Shakra: Powerplay

Twenty years into their career with original members Thom Blunier (guitar), Thomas Muster (guitar), and Roger Tanner (drums)still in the band Shakra return with their ninth album and their second with Indian vocalist John Prakesh. The band is rounded out by Dominik Pfister (bass) and Powerplay is a distinct improvement on its predecessor Back on Track, an album where the chorus of the standout track asserted that the song's main protagonist was, "Fucking crazy."

I wouldn't suggest as their record company (AFM) does that Powerplay is, "utterly irresistible," but it is pretty workmanlike and solid. It's faithfully rooted in the 1980s as strongly evidenced by their remake of Motley Crue's Kickstart My…oh it's not a remake? Oops. Despite that faux pas Powerplay is highly enjoyable hard rock and is, to my ears, the album Gotthard should have made upon their comeback. The album is thirteen tracks long but doesn't outstay its welcome at all and is a solid addition to the band's canon.
