Grand 60: Precious

Grand 60 are a hard rock band from Stockholm, Sweden who have just delivered their debut album titled Precious . Led by guitarist Peter Lundh (who also handles keyboards, bass, and drum programming on the album), Grand 60 also features vocalist Johan Engstrom, keyboard player Leif Gyllenberg, and bassist Fungrim. Precious contains 9 songs of muscular melodic hard rock, not quite metal, and despite the presence of some tasty keyboard textures not quite prog either. Though some comparisons to '80s Whitesnake, Europe, and Dokken can be heard, these guys pretty much have their own sound, thanks to the inventive riffing of Lundh and Engstrom's very fine vocals. The vocalist really hits his stride on the dramatic "Coming Home" and the driving rocker "Left Me Lonely" which has some commanding organ which gives it a slight Deep Purple feel. "Broken Heart" is as close to heavy metal as these guys get thanks to some crunchy riff-o-rama courtesy of Lundh, but there's also some nice raunchy guitar licks and gothic tinged keyboards on "Would It All Remain" that drive up the metal richter scale a bit. So, is Precious mandatory listening for melodic hard rock & metal fans? I'll leave that up to you to decide, but it's certainly solid enough to warrant checking into. They seem to have the musical chops and can write some catchy tunes, so my hope is that they add a real drummer and take this to the next level.
