Kadavar: Kadavar

Normally we talk about Sweden as the home of all the great new retro acts popping up on the scene, but here we have Kadavar, who hail from Berlin, Germany, making quite a stir with their self-titled slab of '70s inspired heaviness. In fact, this album just reeks of 1972, from the songs, to the musicianship, all the way down to the production. Fans of early Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore, Blue Cheer, and Cactus will just love these heavy, bluesy, psychedelic tunes that are jam packed with ferocious guitar riffs, pounding drums, wailing guitar solos, and strong vocals. I mean, take one look at the cover photograph and you know that Kadavar are all about delivering the '70s goods in their brand of stoner rock. "All Our Thoughts" bristles with power as the sludgy riffs and crashing drums invite you right in, while "Black Sun" contains some psychedelic passages amidst the thunderous Sabbath inspired riffs. If you love blistering, blues-laden hard rock solos there are plenty of them throughout the CD, and when Lindemann kicks in the way-wah pedal the results are off the charts. The doomy "Forgotten Past" and "Goddess of Dawn" will bring a smile to any fan of Pentagram, and "Creature of the Demon" features some of the albums most scorching and heavy blues rock jams that almost seem like a long lost track from Sir Lord Baltimore or Cactus. The most interesting is saved for last with "Purple Sage", a real psychedelic freak out that really sounds nothing like the rest of the album, more in the style of early Hawkwind complete with driving riffs and boatloads of trippy sound effects.

There's a lot of really good stoner rock bands emerging on the scene these days, but Kadavar are one that really jumped out at me immediately and knocked me on my ass with their powerful and potent brew of heavy '70s sounds. Can't wait to hear what they come up with next!
