"Dreamland Drowning is a record that many beginning female-fronted metal bands can only dream about making"... well that is some claim to live up to for the Finnish metal group My Reflection, so the question is as to whether their album is actually that good? The answer is that their debut Dreamland Drowning is actually one of the better first showings of its melodic kind. My Reflection are off to a very good start, this group shows a lot of promise.
Besides some clean male vocals if you don't mind the addition of darker growls in the mix then My Reflection's catchy modern metal songs are really worth hearing, the first of note being "Sweet Freedom". Dreamland Drowning is a strong collection of songs by My Reflection and some do hook you stronger than others. Those such as the long symphonic metal closer "Farewell" clocking in at over nine minutes, and it's one of Dreamland Drowning's best of the heavy and catchy tracks on hand complete with some cool orchestration. Surprisingly although the main vocals on this album are of the female kind, and sung very well by Jenni Raikkonen, this song they actually featured predominately male vocals up front.
Something you don't always hear on a debut is quality production and Dreamland Drowning has a very clean and powerful sound doing their songs justice.
With a debut as likeable as Dreamland Drowning I would surely expect to see future releases from My Reflection, but they do have strong competition to keep up with so obviously this new group need to build on the quality they have shown here going forwards and upwards.
