Miss Lava: Red Supergiant

I'd love to know how these guys came up with their name; it reminds me of the very odd (and very real) Miss Atomic Bomb pictures from the 1950s. I have no idea what kind of outfits Miss Lava would wear, but they certainly wouldn't be typical beauty pageant fare. In any event, the music is what really matters here and these guys offer nearly 45 minutes of high-quality metal grooves. To get a sense of the music (and a kind of homage to Tarantino's retro style) check out the video for "Drive" on the band's website.

The music here is best described as beefy, warm, groovy, and inviting. Johnny Lee's vocals are clean and clear, but delivered in a rock and roll style befitting a late-night gig at a local club. Better than the vocals, though, are the guitar parts. If listeners start any of the tracks at random, they'll find the rich sound of K. Raffah's guitar beckoning them to rest their weary bones and listen for a while. At times, Raffah's sound is so large he sounds like two players. His solos aren't flashy, but his judicious use of the wah (listen to "Yesterday's Gone") makes up for it. The drums and bass keep things solid, tight, and powerful. The richness of the sound here is due, in part, to the mixing and mastering talents of Matt Hyde, the Grammy-winning producer famous for his work with Slayer and others. More importantly, though, is the sheer strength of the band itself. I'd recommend this album to anyone who enjoys catchy guitar riffs, warm distortion, and memorable grooves. The whole album is strong, leaving listeners with the satisfying feeling that heavy music is alive and well.
