Group Du Jour: Wonderful Vision (25th Anniversary Edition)

Group Du Jour is Daniel Crommie (vocals, synthesizers, flutes, harmonica, drum programming), Bo Parker (vocals, rhythm guitar, xylimbas, percussion) and Paul Parker (electric guitar). The band formed in 1983 in Portland, Oregon and released a string of albums in the '80s and early '90s.

Wonderful Vision was originally released on vinyl and cassette in 1987. This anniversary edition comes fully remastered with additional bonus tracks.

The music on Wonderful Vision has that '80s electronic new wave sound reminiscent of bands of the era such as The Cure and The Human League. What makes this recording a little more unique than some of the music at that time is the addition of an ethnic/world influence, particularly in Crommie's use of percussion. It adds more interest to the sound and overall this is an enjoyable release that brought back some fond memories.

The album begins with the title track and its electronic beat and poppy vibe. It is an uplifting song with some pretty infectious synth and guitar work. Crommie's vocals are a good fit for this style of electronic pop. The second track "Nice Blue Camera" is a bluesier offering with Paul Parker's soulful lead vocals and nice lead guitar. "Love at 30,000ʹ" has a lush keyboard driven sound whereas "The Eighth Wonder" features heavy percussion and an English style new wave feel.

The weirdest track is the short instrumental "Krill" loaded with electronic effects and synths.

My favourite track has to be "Motion of Waves", an interesting mix of ambient, electronic pop and world/ethnic music. Crommie's flute work is excellent.

I enjoyed Wonderful Vision. It is accessible yet different enough to spark interest outside the new wave genre. A solid 3.5 stars.
