Sunwølf: Beyond the Sun

The doom and gloom of United Kingdom-based Sunwølf is a kind the post-metal genre has come to know well. Echoes of Southern Lord-era Pelican—and to a lesser extent Russian Circles— are the clear signposts here, but what Sunwolf do well is balance the guitar-heavy focus of post-rock and post-metal with the subtle, minimalist drones commonly heard in the music of Bass Communion. Some might be inclined to tag them as "Sunn 0))) without the tri-tone chords," but that would only be true in mood, not in execution. Beyond the Sun is a post-rock album; its drone flourishes are appropriately incorporated, but fans of Mogwai and other popular instrumental guitar rock will feel right at home with this release. However, unlike the famed Scots—and especially unlike Sunn 0)))— Sunwølf don't often let their music roar in the way it ought to. Using crescendo to lead to an unresolved peak can work to considerable effect, but often these songs plod without ever bringing the thunder. Still, this is a strong debut considering how difficult it can be to sound unique in a genre so outdone; if Sunwølf keep making the right sonic choices, being considered in the same league as Russian Circles or Pelican might not seem so far-fetched.
