Blasphemous Creation: Battle of the Ancients

Nevada's Blasphemous Creation list themselves as a 'blackened death metal band', and that's a pretty dead on description of the style that can be found on their latest CD Battle of the Ancients. Formed in 2006 and now two releases into their career, Blasphemous Creation have opened up for all sorts of extreme metal acts over the last few years, and you can quickly tell by listening to their sophomore release that the seasoning has done them a lot of good. In addition to their black metal & death metal influences, you can hear a lot of thrash in their music, especially in the guitar department, making Battle of the Ancients a well rounded and enjoyable affair. The vocals are a mix of growls, rasps, screams, and bellows, which works well as to not pigeonhole the bands music into any one style. Look for some relentless blast beats and a wild mix of guitar thunder, which for my money is the highlight of the album. The title track, "Destroyer of Worlds" and "Centaurian" have some VERY cool riffs, fills, pinch harmonics, and solos, again, trademarks of the thrash scene, and at times the arrangements do get quite technical. Most of the solos are very melodic and tasty, showing that Isaac Wilson has studied his craft well. And, as far as pure 'head banging' points go, tunes like "The Conquerer" and "The Return?" receive rave reviews from this writer, as the band combines old school death metal, thrash, black metal, and a touch of the NWOBHM for good measure, with Wilson spitting out plenty of vocal venom that will make any fan of Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, and Satyricon happy.

Yeah, as you can tell I really dug Battle of the Ancients. Blasphemous Creation might not have created the most original album you'll ever hear, but there's enough variety, top notch playing, and memorable, skull crushingly heavy arrangements included here that will keep me coming back for more.
