Resistance, The: Rise from Treason EP

I'm all for a cool opening gimmick, but I doubt that a thirty second opening, complete with the obligatory tough-guy movie quote, is a good idea for a thirteen minute EP. Yes, "My Fire" is a cool track, but listeners want to get to the music, especially when there isn't really that much to begin with. Save the cool opening sequence and the attitude-fostering lines for the longer release.

The Resistance is a project made up of current and former members of In Flames as well as former members of The Haunted, Kaamos, and Repugnant. The vocalist also performs in Facedown. This band doesn't want to be seen as a side project or a supergroup so much as a band of guys that couldn't resist having some fun making music together. Fair enough. I love it when musicians stay active with performing and songwriting outside of their main groups. One of my favorite bands, Kingdom of Sorrow, is one such group.

The music on this album is consistently hard, driving, aggressive, fast, and angry. It doesn't experiment very much but it is always effective and strong. The sound is mostly a cross between well-produced punk and something approaching grindcore. The vocals are harsh but the articulation is relatively easy to understand. The guitars are especially strong. There aren't any elaborate or flashy solos on this album, just solid leads that raise the level of excitement quickly and powerfully. I recommend that fans check this one out, especially the last two tracks: "Rise from Treason" and "Slugger." Be sure to look up the lyric video to "Slugger" to get a sense of the band and their style. This is a killer new release.
