Blue Food: Engines

Hailing from Fort Lee, New Jersey, Blue Food formed in 2008 and have been playing the New York area ever since. The band has just released their debut CD Engines, a rousing mixture of rock, metal and funk, with the emphasis on the latter.

In the band are Odin Aluarez (drums), Michael Carolan (trumpet), Jeremy Gorin (saxophone), Chris Winn (trombone), Angel Eduardo (vocals), Wihelmus Sapanaro (bass) and Miles Ungar (guitar). The band has been described as "Stevie Wonder meets Led Zeppelin" and that is a fair assessment. The vocals are soulful and passionate and the band lays down some deep bass with heavy rock riffs and brass never very far away. The bass playing is excellent throughout as is the horn section. It's an upbeat record with some pretty catchy melodies sprinkled throughout.

A slapping bass groove kicks off the record with the heavy funk of "Boogiemen". Tight grooves and a searing horn section is what you can expect. In "Tète-À-Tète" a muted jazzy sound turns into heavier riffs and funky rhythms while in "Waterwalking" hard rock lead guitar is blended with metallic rhythms for a full on funked up assault. The rest of the album continues in the same style although the band offers some nice acoustic guitar in the soulful "Seeds" and the intriguing "The Revolution Will Be CGI" ends the album in a delightfully heavy way.

My only complaint is the songs start to sound rather similar after a while but there is no denying this band's penchant for deep soulful grooves and spicy brass sounds. Perhaps this is not the best album to relax to but for party music, Engines will surely satisfy.
