Feinberg, Michael: The Elvin Jones Project
Michael Feinberg is a jazz bassist and has been around the New York City jazz scene for the last few years. His latest album The Elvin Jones Project pays homage to the great jazz drummer Elvin Ray Jones whom he considers to be a great inspiration. Jones passed away in 2004.
Every song on the album is in some way related to Jones and Feinberg's band members have either recorded or toured with the late jazz icon. They include Billy Hart (drums), George Garzone (saxophones), Tim Hagans (trumpet), Leo Genovese (keyboards) and Alex Wintz (guitar).
The album starts with the jazzy ambience of "Earth Jones". Feinberg's heavy bass notes languishly flow amidst a gentle ambient backdrop. Strains of trumpet and percussion give this one a dream-like spacey quality. The trumpet sounds gradually unfold to a cacophonic build up then ease off again.
Feinberg's up-tempo, ripping bass along with Hart's fantastic drumming highlight "Taurus People". The drumming is complex and the piano is both angular and melodic while the saxophone adds to the song's melody.
With the gentle "It Is Written" softly woven trumpet lines create a wisp like atmosphere and Wintz's lyrical guitar works beautifully. Feinberg's bowed bass begins "Nancy With The Laughing Face", a song filled with stellar playing; bass, sax, trumpet and poignant piano motifs. "The Unknighted Nations" is a rousing jazz track featuring Wintz's tasty guitar work and an excellent drum solo from Hart.
The Elvin Jones Project is a very fine jazz album and one that I can recommend without hesitation to anyone who likes a more adventurous jazz experience.
