Sybreed: God Is An Automaton

Already familiar with the Sybreed brand of modern metal? If you are and you liked what you heard on the band's previous albums, you can consider God Is An Automaton a perfectly safe blind buy, as style-wise it's not much of a departure for the band, and the quality of their music is still typically high. On the other hand, if you've never listened to Sybreed before, their new album is a great starting point on your way to get to know the band. Chances are, come the epic, proggy finale in the form of the near 10-minute long "Destruction And Bliss" you'll be a die-hard fan of the Swiss modern metallers.

And I don't really want to say that "Destruction And Bliss" is the album's one and only killer track. It may be my personal favorite, but I do realize that many longtime fans of the band will be even more excited by the powerful mixture of earth-shattering guitar riffs and inventively used synthesizers which is to be found in the likes of "Posthuman Manifesto", "Red Nova Ignition", "Hightech Versus Lowlife" or the title track. And a special mention must go to "The Line of Least Resistance" which sounds like a Paradise Lost hit from their synth-heaviest period – and I mean this as a compliment, mind you! Additionally, an intriguing steampunk-themed cover and an involving story hidden in the lyrics make the listening experience all the more wholesome and satisfying.

Any complaints? Well, personally I wish the band went easy on vocoders here and there, but then again there are perhaps many listeners who love the vocoder-mutated vocals more than any others, and I must admit they do fit the overall atmosphere of the album. This is great, great stuff, honestly – don't miss it if modern metal is your thing!
