Clock Paradox: Egotheism
Attention, fans of melodic death metal! One of this year's finest genre releases has just arrived and – surprise, surprise! – it doesn't bear a logo you've been familiar with for many years, but is actually a debut album from a talented Finnish band Clock Paradox. Titled Egotheism and using the lyrics to tell a dark story which is basically a psycho's confession, this effort not only kicks major ass, but apparently also announces great new players entering the death metal scene.
"Virtual Compassion" opens the album with devilish screams and haunted atmosphere, but also sports a great slower section after the 3-minute mark. The second track, "In the Flesh", is another fine mixture of lighter and wilder moments, but afterwards we are treated to the brutal "Machine Mind" – a live broadcast from a torture chamber if I ever heard one! In "Cleansing Self", on the other hand, a huge portion of the lyrics is whispered to us, but that doesn't make the song any less powerful. My personal favorites make up the second half of the album, though. They are: the entrancing "The God Complex", the final "Paradigm" which lasts over 7 minutes and shows the band at its most proggy, and the inspired "Void" which takes its time before charging at you like a bull from hell, then pauses for a carefully measured moment and soon after that hits you again with all its might.
Just eight tracks lasting slightly over 40 minutes – and yet Egotheism makes a lasting impression after the very first listening session. Listen to it repeatedly for a week and you'll be as Clock Paradox-addicted as I am right now! Hope to be hearing from these guys again in 2013 as they're clearly at a very creative stage of their career.
