Zaub Nasty: Cigarettes & Baklava

This is the first I have heard of the Californian band Zaub Nasty. Their debut EP Cigarettes & Baklava is a decent listen, especially for those who like their music on the adventurous side of progressive rock.

In the band are Toofun Golchin (electric guitar), Peter Brittsan (drums), Colin Kupka (saxophone), Yunus Iyriboz (electric guitar) and Max Whipple (bass).

Cigarettes & Baklava is an all instrumental eclectic prog album that I have liked more with each successive spin. The music is a little hard to categorize with elements of rock, jazz and avant-garde with Middle Eastern motifs accenting the sound. The album begins with "10/17/11" which starts in a mellow way with nice guitar work until the rapid fire rhythms take hold. The Middle Eastern element is ever present; a sort of gypsy flair which is quite intriguing. "Run For Your Life" continues in the same vein but here the riffs are heavier, almost doom-like in structure.

The album's heaviest tune is the rocking "Marching Elephants" with a chord progression that is more than a little addictive. Fuzzy guitar grooves and riffs a plenty along with searing lead guitar makes this one my personal favourite.

If you like your progressive rock and fusion with an eclectic edge, Cigarettes & Baklava may be well worth your time. Hopefully the band will record a full length release in the near future.
