Belgian black metal act Gorath are calling it quits, but they are going out in style with their sixth and final album The Chronicles of Khiliasmos. Their brand of epic, doomy, post-black metal is spread across three tracks of pure apocalyptic hatred and blesphemy. This is not your standard Norwegian styled black metal, so don't expect a non-stop assault of blast beats, wild vocal shrieks, and furious tremelo picked riffs, as Gorath opt instead for slow, ponderous & textured riffs that bridge the gap between doom and post rock, and a variety of diffferent rhythms. Vocals fluctuate between deep death metal growls, anguished screams, and your more typical chilling black metal rasp, and they are housed within songs that are epic in scope, and quite progressive actually. "Khiliasmos II" is my favorite of the three here, a powerful dirge that almost approaches some of the slower and more potent of the recent Marduk output, but the 21-minute "Khiliasmos III" is also noteworthy for it's absolutely crushing riffs and creepy atmospheric passages.
It's not your standard black metal fare, but The Chronicles of Khiliasmos is a moving and chilling listening experience, and allows Gorath to go out on a high note. Thanks for the music guys!
