Arbogast: I

With multiple heavy musical influences, Chicago three piece band Arbogast combine many styles like stoner, thrash, hardcore, sludge and punk into their intense lively songs. This can be heard on their debut I, I that rings a bell, now where have I seen that album title before? Though this I is also quite heavy it's not in that same style of music that wont send you crazy trying to work out how they do that.

Along with Arbogast's intense music and hefty clean vocals is the heavy subject matter, as the included notes read "Arbogast's boisterous debut tackles a theme on the minds of many: the declining morals of a country where the middle class is being overthrown by the greed of the privileged." Not exactly the happiest of material which is in line with the albums bleak artwork. Arbogast like to alternate between keeping the pedal down and then easing back in while maintaining the potency and complementing this with many interesting instrumental passages.

For a three piece act the Arbogast crew are up to the job and do pack a punch which works effectively for the most part on I. This kind of musical combination can be quite the balancing act and sometimes that intensity sees them travelling close to the edge like on instrumental "Soulsfate" where they risk losing it to a sea of noise, but thankfully Arbogast show enough talent and restraint to keep it on track resulting in a strong album closer.
