Silent Leges Inter Arma: Silent Leges Inter Arma

Three years after their 2009 EP, Synästhesie, Germany's black metal troupe Silent Leges Inter Arma release their eponymous début album. In that time it appears that this savage bunch have been honing their craft and developing their raw and razored brand of black metal. As you'd expect for any kvlt black metal album, the production is grim and filthy, the sound being severe and jagged around the edges, though a little more clarity wouldn't have done the album any harm, particularly for the drums. Of all the tracks, with its slow tempo and melancholic melody in its introduction, 'Beyond The Light' stands out as one of the best. Here, the band is unafraid to push the bounds of their musicianship and song-craft, a trait that thankfully continues for the remainder of the album. Another interesting feature are the acoustic tracks, 'Shades' and 'In Shadows Again'. Both are incredible pieces that work well amid the towering black metal wrath that surround them. With vague hints in the direction of death metal and minor elements that could, at a push, be considered progressive, Silent Leges Inter Arma refrain from allowing their demonic aesthetic to wander far from the narrowed left hand path of black metal. That's what makes Silent Leges Inter Arma's début such an interesting and exciting album. Well worth a listen and a band to watch.
