Kong: Merchants of Air

Hailing from Amsterdam is the awesomely eclectic, Space Rock/Electronica band Kong. Their latest record, entitled Merchants Of Air, is an 11 track ride into the sublime and obtuse. 99% instrumental, this excellent effort is in great company of other contemporary acts such as the amazing NYC band, Dub Trio or the equally brilliant Bolt. Kong throws everything into their musical mix, including the preverbal kitchen sink.

Kong has a way of taking their experimentation and capturing a little bit of it within every song, while taking you on some sort of magical journey. Each song becomes its own soundtrack with synth undertones pulsating the story within or creating its own story inside a story. Guitars seemingly flying askew all about, while the rhythm section keeps things percolating to an almost boil. Songs like "Same Meaning Different Worlds" or "Steamtrucking" are excellent examples of what Kong has to offer. Both songs, much like the entire album, take the listener on a scenic voyage through the minds of band members; Mark Drillich-Bass, Samples and some guitars, Mandy Hopman-Drums, Tijs Keverkamp-Guitar and David Kox-Guitar and Samples. The results are quite groove laden, Hard Rockin' at times with a constant Electronica pulse and quite quirky, in a good way.

Kong's 11 track disc features 10 tracks of instrumental music with the final track, "Back Into The Trees", featuring vocals and I found this four piece act to be a really fun listen. All 11 tracks are very musical and explorative, while never being overly self indulgent. From the groove of "Vapour Lock" to the quirkiness of "No Strings Attached", Kong are entertainingly off kilter and I for one enjoyed it. Eclectic, Proggy, Avant-garde and fun, these are the first words that come to mind about Kong. Oh, I forgot good! Check these guys (and gal) out.
