TWiNGiANT: Mass Driver

Well this is a very fine mess to get yourselves into! A boorish, boisterous, brandishing sludgy mess at that, but one that will find you leaving the sludge pit with a grimy smile on your face and the beat of your heart just about racing out of your chest. It takes a little time to sink in due to the sheer barrage of fuzz that comes your way, but there's no doubt that with their debut release Mass Driver, TWiNGiANT have struck pay-sludge! Gargling vocals only aid the crackling hum of bass and winning twinning guitars to make their dense mark on the inside of your skull, while the constant crash of clattering cymbals leaves you catatonically comatose in a crushing craze.

The fickle among us, for there are some hiding in the nooks and crannies, will tell you that the nine tracks here lack diversity, always looking straight ahead, bludgeoning their way to their destination. However slap a pair of headphones round your noggin and a whole world of nuance is revealed through the separation of the guitars from each other, while the unfussy beats have a heftier hack due to their unwavering unfussiness.

Everything is kept intentionally lo-fi, this isn't an album that wants to dazzle you with pizzazz, or intrigue you with arrangements that took longer to create than it does to listen to the album for a full week solid. No, TWiNGiANT know that their power comes from their unashamed full-force assault - something they achieve without the need for foot to the floor speed, OTT histrionics, or flaccid showmanship. Spin the wheel and dip into the album at any point, with "A Drift In Space" combining a bluesy cool with scathing riff, "Burning Through" grooving hard with some throat stripping vocals, while "H.I.G.M." adds a space rock flavour to the already potent mix.

It is big, it is clever, yet you know TWiNGiANT have been very naughty boys. Jump aboard Mass Driver and encourage the gloriously good bad behaviour.
