If you happened to read my review of the excellent Blues For Jimi Blu-ray release from Eagle Rock recently, you already know that this 2007 concert recorded at The Hippodrome Theatre in London to help celebrate the launch of The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Live at Monterey DVD, was a fun and spirited event. Here we had guitar legend Gary Moore and his band (Dave Bronze-bass, Darrin Mooney-drums) paying tribute to Hendrix with a fiery set of some of his best loved songs. Fans of the Blu-ray will be happy to know that now you can also enjoy this red hot concert on CD as well.
As with the Blu-ray, the sound on this CD set is stellar, with Moore and company in fine form tearing into Hendrix classics like "Purple Haze", "Fire", "Manic Depression", "Angel", "Stone Free" and "Hey Joe". Gary does a fantastic job on these tunes, showing what a brilliant guitarist he was (not many players performed so well in their careers covering hard rock, blues, heavy metal, jazz, and pop) and nailing the vocal parts just as well. As a fun bonus, former Hendrix bandmates Mitch MItchell and Billy Cox come out to join Moore on a few numbers ("Red House" and "Stone Free" are especially rousing) making this a true night of legends. Sadly, both Moore and MItchell have since passed away, giving this whole recording a somewhat emotional, poignant aura. It almost becomes more a reminder of just how great Gary Moore was, even though the original intent was to honor Jimi Hendrix. Just listen to him shred on the chilling "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" for proof of his greatness.
Kudos to Eagle Rock for once again putting together a nice little package, as the CD booklet is filled with info about the event and plenty of color photos. Gary, Mitch, and Jimi, we miss you all.
