Northumbria: Northumbria

Northumbria is according to their Facebook page a, "Toronto based ambient metal duo formed in 2011 by former Holoscene members Jim Field and Dorian Williamson. Theei sound is a combination of the various influences each member has brought with them, from industrial metal to goth to post rock. Using only guitar and bass mega amplified and recorded live, Northumbria create a wall of improvised drones that take the listener on a sonic journey through a dystopian landscape." That's pretty different from the usual PR bullshit we normally get fed and Northumbria's music is pretty different from much of the stuff we get sent here at SoT.

Northumbria's music is by no means an easy listen but that's the point. It's challenging and at times really beautiful and at times equally dissonant and harsh. It's certainly not what you'd put on in the car for a swift trip to the shops as it requires concentration and to be the listener's primary focus. None of the songs are short and each gives value for money in the drone department. As I said, Northumbria don't offer an easy listen but if you want to engage with work that teeters on the edge of ambience at times then you know where to go.
