Larsson, Sven: Bad Mad Man

Acclaimed Swedish guitarist Sven Larsson has been around the prog and AOR scene since the late 1990's recording four studio albums with highly regarded proggers Galleon and two with the AOR /prog hybrid outfit Xinema. Also known for his work with Westcoast AOR'sters Street Talk, Bad Mad Man is his second solo album and is released via Avenue of Allies. For the most part this picks up where his debut album, 2010's Sunlight And Shadow left off with some rich guitar work, appealing melodies and smooth vocals.

Amongst the featured musicians are collaborators from Sven's past and present including his colleagues from Street Talk, Fredrik Bergh (keyboards), Björn Lodmark (bass) and Christian Johansson (drums) and also the voice of Street Talk, Göran Edman. Vocalist Thomas Eriksson was heard on Sven's debut, while Anders Åhlund debuts on lead vocals on two tracks and Galleon's Ulf Pettersson and Göran Fors also make an appearance.

Avenue of Allies are a lable renowned for their Westcoast sound and Bad Mad Man is no exception to this with the cosy-by-the-fire ballad 'How Could It Come To This' and mellow yet powerful opener 'Dance The Night Away' being prime examples. Larsson is also not afraid to crank up the tempo such as on the urgent rocker 'Sin City' and flexes his muscular guitar sound on the two instrumentals 'Green Unit' and 'Welcome To My Island'. Overall the album is more than just a showcase for Larsson's majestic riffs, licks and solos and has some well-crafted songs that for the most part evoke a laid-back and chilled out vibe.
