Vanderbuyst: The Flying Dutchmen

Having browsed the photographs in Vanderbuyst's biography, then read that they believe that, "the fun has been taken out of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll," and that they are determined to, "continue their tireless quest to save the world from flaccid rock" as well as noting that the first song on the album is called "Frivolous Fanny" it would definitely be fair to say that I listened to The Flying Dutchmen with some trepidation. Initially my fears were fully realised as the aforementioned "Frivolous Fanny" is by some distance the worst song on the records and for me pretty much encapsulates what I consider to be, "flaccid rock."

Thankfully things improve after that. Sure, most of the disc is old fashioned guitar-based hard rock but it is played with such conviction that one can't help being drawn in whilst listening to their energetic efforts. The main criticism I have is that other than the title track (opening line, "Roaming the streets of Katmandu, looking for meaning, looking for life")none of the tracks remained with me for long after I had moved on to somewhere else. Vanderbuyst remind me of the much missed Hellacopters and that is always a good thing.
