Deformity: When Tomorrow Comes

The cover of this new release is pretty cool, an apocalyptic vision worthy of one of the Terminator films. I liked way the fire took up most of the frame but also formed a kind of menacing pair of figures on the left and right sides. I enjoy looking at a striking album cover.

The music on this release isn't nearly as strong as the cover. In general, the music is a variation on traditional metal but without the charm that made so many people fall in love with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal back 30 years ago. The songs are all competent metal compositions, but they don't bear a unique watermark that sets Deformity apart from other bands. Even worse, the lead singer overly channels James Hetfield's tendency to add a "heh" or "hah" after almost every syllable. At times, I wondered if I wasn't really listening to outtakes from Load. I did enjoy some of the more melodic sections as played by the guitars, especially the lead parts on "The Life is Better than Love." On the whole, the album isn't bad, but it doesn't really offer anything terribly compelling, memorable, or new.
