Beyond Mortal Dreams: Dreaming Death

Dreaming Death is an EP by Australia's Beyond Mortal Dreams. When I first saw the band's name I figured them to be a black metal band. Why, I am not really sure, other than it seems like the name just fits a black metal band. However, when opening song "Feast of Carrion" blasted through my speakers I was pleasantly surprised to hear death metal of the highest quality.

Formed initially in 1992, the band has had several line-up changes and sporadic recording. As a result Dreaming Death is only their second release, not counting a couple of demos released in the early 2000s. Why the band has had so many problems and line-up changes, I really don't know. One thing I do know is that I hope like hell that this line-up remains stable enough to continue to make music as this stuff is factually some awesome death metal. Sound-wise the band reminds me of bands such as Morbid Angel and Deicide with vocalist Doomsayer reminding me more of Glen Benton than anyone else.

Don't get the idea that Beyond Mortal Dreams is a copycat however as they are most certainly not. Yes it's not exactly original, but as I've said before, death metal isn't meant to be original. When I want my death metal I want it fast and heavy as fuck. On this count Dreaming Death delivers in full. Yes, there are a few black metal elements on the album, so purists may whine, but really who the fuck cares when the album is this good?

The only complaint I have about the album is the fact that at 18 minutes long it is just too much of a tease. The band needs to get more tracks together and get a full length issued ASAP. Check the band out and order the album if you want to hear some high-quality death metal.
