Grind veterans Pig Destroyer are back with their latest collection of extreme chaos in the form of Book Burner, 19 songs clocking in at just over 30 minutes. Now, grind is surely an acquired taste for many metal fans, and Pig Destroyer is either a band that you are going to love or hate. Many of the tunes on display here are over before you know it, as the riffs zig-zag and pummel, the drums blast, and the vocal delivery of J.R. Hayes is a combination of screams, bellows, shouts and growls. None of the songs last long enough for you to really appreciate what is going on, and that's a shame as Scott Hull is a riff machine ("Valley of the Geysers" flat out scorches) but so many of these tracks get started with a bang and you blink and they are over. With 19 songs, and each one not differing much from the next, it's like a 30 minute blur of noise and chaos that unfortunately doesn't quite work consistently from start to finish. The guys do have some serious chops though, which they've shown us throughout the years, but Book Burner is a little short in the tooth and lacking in originality and variety. Grind lovers might find some mileage here, but all others beware.
