Promethium: Welcome To The Institution

Debut album from these tight and forceful old school metallers, Welcome To The Institution was originally released back in 2010 so we can hopefully look forward to a new release in the not too distant future with album number two currently well underway. Hailing from the North West of England, Promethium are a five piece that showcase some inspired technical riffing against a backdrop of dark and yet subtly melodic aggression. The twin axe assault of guitarists Daniel Lovett-Horn and Rossi ensures some memorable moments with a strong emphasis on precision riffs and harmonies – the brutal 'Tribute to the Fallen', sombre instrumental 'Distant Illusion' and the catchy, hook filled 'Visions' all being good examples of their ability to combine power and melody. Vocalist Gary McGahon is equally impressive with his assured delivery, spitting out the lyrics with venom one minute and then soothing the senses the next he succeeds in making the music of Promethium really come alive. The galloping guitar driven 'Cycle of Vengeance' is arguably the most powerful and dominant track across the CD and will really make you sit up and take notice as it explodes from the speakers. Closing number 'Murder Inc.' is another highlight with its hypnotic, swirling riffs and melancholic lyrical themes.

A solid and impressive first full length release, Promethium are yet another young and vibrant metal act from the UK that can be confidently tipped to have a great future ahead of them. With another thumbs up for the sinister artwork this is an album that can be strongly recommended.
