Putamen Insula: Putamen Insula

Putamen Insula are a Quebec based band with an extremely interesting sound. At first the band comes across as straight up black metal, but further listening to the album shows a broad range of musical styles thrown into the mix. For example their is a distinct crust influence, as well as even a more alternative rock vibe as well with many of the songs showing melody amidst the black metal chaos.

Black metal purists may scoff at the mixing of genres but the fact of the matter is that Putamen Insula have created a sound that is both unique and captivating at the same time. Songs such as "Death of a Personality' are both tuneful and insane at the same time, a strange mix of rock with black metal that has to be heard to believed.

The closest band I can think of that I could compare Putamen Insula to would be Lifelover. The main difference between the two bands however would be the fact that while Lifelover seemed at times to more rock oriented than black metal, Putament Insula seems to be more black metal inclined than not.

I would highly recommend this album to anyone who is into black metal and is looking for something a bit different than what they are used to hearing. The whole album is full of solid tracks and it probably won't be long before a label snatches these guys up. An extremely solid album and a fantastic debut full-length.
