Predecessor: Learning to Suffer

Predecessor are an American band from North Carolina and Learning to Suffer is the bands first full-length. Despite being only 7 songs long, the album is surprisingly 35 minutes long. Even though it is kind of lengthy for such few songs, the album seems to to be done in a heartbeat as it is so engaging that the time literally flies by.

Sound-wise Predecessor are a cross between melodic death metal and more groove oriented thrash bands such as Pantera. Most of the time I am not into the whole groove metal sound, but the thing about Predecessor is that they keep a firm emphasis on the death metal side of things at the same time with heavy, catchy songs. If you think more along the lines of Clayman era In-Flames with some groove metal thrown in you should get the idea.

It is kind of surprising that the band had to self-release the album as I would have thought that with a sound like this, and an album as insanely good as Learning to Suffer, labels would be knocking their door down with offers. It appears that this isn't the case however, and this is really too bad since this is a really good album. Everything from the vocals to the instrumentation is well played and the songs are solid overall. I highly recommend checking the album out as soon as you can. The album is available to stream on Youtube or download for free right now. However, support the band and buy the album-These guys deserve the support. Check out the song "Vacant Embrace" at the link below where you can also find a link on the same page to download the full album.
