Intestinal: The Rottening

A quick squint at the cover-art from Swedish grinders Intestinal will show that the band's logo, while rather smart, gives no actual hint as to what this outfit are called. Hence the metal rules state that we must be in death metal territory, with The Rottening being the band's second effort at gouging out your innards and gently chewing on them. To hammer home the blood squirting point, there are song titles such as "Vaginal Vomitation", "Gut Fucked" and as I alluded to earlier, "Eating Your Inner Organs" (I believe a certain Mr Lecter would order Chianti with that...) and in a way they offer more of a hint at the band's outlook than first glance may suggest. Shocking as those titles are meant to be, they are in actual fact pretty middle of the road extreme fair and, while very good at it, that is pretty much where Intestinal reside.

That's not to take anything away from the barrage of drums, completely convincing growled vocals or ripping, raw guitar bursts. However if you've sampled from the table of say Entombed, or Facebreaker, then you'll know what disgusting treats await you at The Rottening. "Reborn In Gore" spits with snorting ferocity, while "Undead Unleashed" kicks into a gloriously dirty groove, where a slight increase in tempo heightens the effect. It is a trick Intestinal could do with pulling out of the hat more often, as the infection of blood curdling, yet singular paced attacks which afflict this album, is undoubtedly its weakest point. All of the tracks on The Rottening are mighty in execution and bulging with vicious intent, but the effect wears off as you wade through similar themes across the eleven tracks that almost merge into one.

Still, this is a beast of a CD housing some ferocious, evil themes and it exploits them well. Just don't expect to be scared out of your skin by originality, or daring exploits.
